Are Your Customers Looking for Unique Customization?

  • Sep 9, 2022

If you have been personalizing promo for some time, surely you’ve come across the term DTG. Simply put, Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing is a process by which images are rendered digitally on apparel using a high-quality printer and special fabric-safe inks. If your clients still haven’t given this personalization method a shot, this upcoming fall could be a great time to try it out. With DTG, your clients can customize several pieces of apparel, including t-shirts, hoodies, outerwear, business wear, pants, and hats. Educate your clients on the types of occasions where it would be beneficial to use this printing technique and secure more of these orders!

Cost

If cost is a factor for your clients,  DTG is excellent because it only requires one setup fee regardless of how many colours are in the design. This is not the case with screen printing, which requires a new screen to be set up for each colour in the design, resulting in a more expensive and time-consuming process.  With DTG you can print on any colour garment using any ink colour, including gradients, which are expensive to reproduce using other imprint methods. With DTG, the inks are water-based and more transparent than plastisol. This allows the ink to overlap and blend, making beautiful, smooth gradients. If you’re looking to fulfill a small order with colourful artwork, DTG should be at the top of your list.

Detail + Consistency

DTG printing is best suited for projects that require a high level of accuracy when it comes to rending small details. The screen-printing process has many variables that can affect print quality. Screen tension, clogged mesh, squeegee sharpness, and pressure all make a difference on their own. As a result, it is likely that the 1st batch of a printing job may differ from a 2nd print which could represent an issue for companies with strict branding guidelines. On the other hand, DTG involves the use of a machine that processes a digital file and prints it directly onto the garment, leaving no room for inconsistency as there are almost no variables to worry about.

Comfort

If comfortability is something that your client prioritizes, then you should consider DTG.  There are occasions when the feel of the product is just as important as the personalization. For example, apparel that is intended to be used at sporting events such as marathons, training sessions, or games. If the ink clogs up the fibers of the garment, this can severely reduce the breathability of the product, which in turn can affect the athlete’s performance. The type of ink can sometimes also add weight to the garment in places where the imprint sits, this is something to consider when clients choose lightweight blends. Lastly, the texture can be rough on the skin, for example when an imprint is embroidered. As DTG prints directly onto the garment, it makes for a more comfortable experience that does not infringe on the wearer’s enjoyment in any way.
